Make Tari Channels Great AGAIN!

We’re sitting on an underused asset.

Tari’s community channels, Telegram, Discord, X, have real reach. The TG alone has ~40,000 members. But posting is sparse, interaction is low, and the energy doesn’t reflect a project mid-way through an active community takeover.

That’s a huge missed opportunity, and an easy one to fix.

The opportunity

Reach without engagement is dormant potential. Consider the TG: 40,000 members, and even a 1% re-engagement rate is 400 people brought back into the fold, following the progress, spreading the word, becoming active again.

These channels should be the front door to the CTO. Right now they’re quiet. Let’s change that.

The proposal

A targeted CTO refresh across all community channels: new messaging, consistent posting, and a genuine sense of momentum and rebirth.

Structure:

  • Two trusted moderators covering Telegram and Discord, keeping both active with regular posting and engagement
  • One dedicated moderator for X, driving consistent posting and interaction there
  • Council oversight, with active Council members already present in these groups well placed to supervise
  • All three sourced through the normal Core Contributor nomination process (community/comms category), so the people driving this are properly vetted and accountable, not appointed ad hoc

I’m proposing the structure here, not the individuals. Nominations follow the standard process.

The relaunch

Kick it off with an all-inclusive community Q&A: what’s happening with Tari, where the CTO is heading, updates across the board. The goal is simple, get people talking in these channels again.

To drive participation, we could tie in some modest symbolic giveaways, e.g. a randomly selected question-asker wins some $XTM, purely to spark engagement. Funding would come from a community initiatives pool, subject to approval.

Why this matters

This is low effort, high reward. We’re not building anything new, just switching the lights back on in rooms that already have people in them. A more active, informed, energised community is the cheapest growth lever we have.

Next productive step: the Council begins nominating Core Contributors in the community/comms direction to staff this, and we lock a date for the relaunch Q&A.

I’m personally in favour of this.

My one passing comment is we do have the Tari Agent on Discord / Telegram and in principle I feel like if we found a way of better leveraging that, it may be more resourceful for where we’re currently as a community. That said I can see why having a presence and energy around the channels would be useful.

X / Twitter is an obvious gap right now - there is virtually 0 presence there and it feels quite under utilised for the following we have. Especially if the Ootle is supposed to launching presumably within this side of the year - there is a lot of work needed here just to warm up the account and interest.

im personally not in favour of overusing bots .. gives a stale impression imo

I don’t think all Moderators need to be CC. I’m definitely all for reviving these channels, though.

Telegram and Discord are very well moderated now. Fox and I have admin status and can review the automod actions and assign exceptions as needed.
The problem with the Telegram channel is none of the active posters here use it, opting to use the XTM Trader channel instead. So the server and project just look totally dead to any new people joining there.

The best thing people can do to revive the Telegram is… use the Telegram. I’ve tried to spread the word that we have active moderation and price chat is now allowed but that doesn’t seem to make any difference.

Also, we have a writer’s room and marketing channel for people to pitch ideas and post content but it often feels like it’s just me talking to myself/the bot in there. So I’ve largely stopped posting in there and just do things myself now. If people are looking to take on more responsibility with social media, that would be a good place to start contributing.

Instead of “Give me the twitter creds and I’ll make good posts” I think the approach should be “I’ve been making all this content and submitting it to the current contributors, wouldn’t it be easier if I had the credentials now that I’ve proven myself?”.
I remember when the council members were announced and at least a dozen community members complained about the quality of the post, and yet no one stepped in to fix it or suggest a better one.

The official Telegram/Discord channel’s stupid bot doesn’t delete spam, but it frequently deletes or restricts posts from community members by mistake. As a result, everyone has moved over to free-for-all trade channels. And you rarely see any spam in those unrestricted trade channels. That’s the current reality.

You’re right, this has historically been an issue. But Simon, Fox, and myself have spent a combined many dozens of hours working on fixing this in the Discord and I feel confident the problem is essentially resolved there now.

Telegram is a more recent effort but we’re making progress there too.

I agree re overuse of bots, but what about an easy win:

Each new topic on this forum, and maybe even every reply, could be screenshot and posted to Discord/Telegram with a link to join the conversation on the forum or invite replies directly in that channel…

Just tried to post a link to an x.com post in the official channel and it was auto-binned. More engagement there is going to require a significant relaxing of auto-moderation.

It’s simple, people cannot freely talk on the main channels, unless that changes i don’t see any reason people will suddenly jump back there.

“We are pro freedom, as long as your speech is moderated”

One of the solutions could be adding exceptions to bots for active/trusted users where they can post unrestricted.

We’ve authorized so many council members as admins now, so we could totally think about turning off the bot to see how it plays out. Honestly, I don’t even dare to speak in the main channel anymore because I never know when I’m gonna get muted/post deleted, that happen to me several times. And I’m literally a Chinese community admin—who deal with spam mes.daily.

Moderation and engagement aren’t the same job. You and Fox keeping the channels clean and answering questions is valuable, but that’s maintenance, keeping the lights on. What I’m proposing is someone whose actual mandate is to grow and energize the audience: consistent posting, driving conversation, giving the 40k people a reason to show up.

On “no one stepped up to fix the council post,” respectfully that cuts the other way. If a post went out that far below standard and it bothered people, that’s exactly the gap a dedicated comms role fills. Nobody fixing it is an argument for this proposal, not against it.

And here’s the wider point. We shouldn’t be shifting this to “people should just use the Telegram more.” A proposal to fix it is on the table right now. The productive response isn’t explaining why the channels are the way they are, it’s backing this, improving it, or helping find the people to run it.

would be spammy imo … what we could do is extent to forum posts which have high interaction rates?

I agree with you.

Currently, there is a barrier between Tari labs and the community. Everything is always behind closed doors. Council, is trying to solve this, by being transparent.

Systematic “Soon”, “you will know when it’s time” and “we are working really really hard” led to this stagnation.

How can we have engaging conversations when most of the answers are so vague that it instantly shuts down the dialogue.

“A proposal to fix this” is what myself and others have been working on for months. This is a well known issue and, like I said, something contributors have been spending many dozens of hours on recently. This is why it’s helpful to read the forums and community channels regularly before submitting proposals so you know if something is already being worked on. You could have just gotten in contact with the people already handling this issue - you’re in the writer’s room where we discuss all of this

Nobody fixing it means there’s no one that should be getting access to socials. I didn’t get Discord permissions because I said I was going to make everything better, I did everything in my power to improve the Discord server without permissions and then in return for those efforts I was given permissions. That’s how it should work.

I appreciate the efforts this morning by yourself and others to help kickstart some activity in the Telegram and stress-test the new bot settings. This is helpful and will help us fix the remainder of the bot issues in Telegram, which is the first step to reviving that channel.

Just wanted to add, there are two more channels that could be used to get traction.

Tiktok and Instagram.

Council please let us know how we can contribute.

If this has been worked on for months, where’s the output? 4 of the last 5 posts on X are show reminders.

The default response shouldn’t be “people have to prove themselves to get on our radar.” People have jobs, and not everyone’s receiving a stipend to sit in the writer’s room waiting to be noticed.

The productive approach is simple: agree this is a need right now, have the Council spec out a CC role around X and the community channels, then ask for nominations and portfolios. If someone’s willing to ship for free, great. If not, allocate a budget.

That’s it. Identify, discuss, ship. It doesn’t take months of forum chatter to execute, it takes a decision.

Happy to help make it happen. But let’s actually move.

Tiktok is devious and mandatory needs shipping

The output is the very noticeable improvement across Discord and Telegram, new socials I’m running on Bluesky/Mastodon, Tari Shows moved to Discord and now available on YouTube as well, and even a 3mo marketing plan Simon put together.

You asked about the X account on the 10th, you got a response within 3hrs and Alli was invited to the writer’s room. Since then you’ve given her no content to post? No discussion of any ideas? Simon made that happen almost instantly. People are listening to you and trying to work with you. So work with us.

Miss me with this. Both Fox and I run our own businesses. I work 7 days a week. I did the vast majority of this work for free, before the council was formed. I assure you $160/mo is not the differentiating factor here. We make time for the things that are important to us.

Good, that’s a lot more moving than was visible from outside, and it should be louder.

But I don’t think that changes the core point, it sharpens it. The X account has 250k followers and the show averages ~60 views. That gap tells me the problem probably isn’t output or effort, it’s reach and quality of what’s landing.

Today’s discussion yielded content bounties. Let’s go make this happen. Identify, discuss, ship.
