Lets get $XTM on ThorChain

Let’s get $XTM on THORChain.

Quick signal first: I ran a poll in the official Tari TG asking if the community wanted a THORChain integration. 82% in favour out of 40 votes. People want this. So let’s talk about how we actually pull it off.

Where this came from

THORChain just went live with native $XMR and $ZEC swaps. No wrapped tokens, no CEX, no custodian, the two biggest privacy coins now trade directly against BTC, ETH and stables through THORChain liquidity.

That’s the whole thesis in one move. CEXs keep delisting privacy coins, so THORChain is becoming the decentralised home for them. If XMR and ZEC belong there, so does $XTM.

A few of us reached out to the THORChain team to float it. The reply was constructive, and it handed us the exact playbook:

“Build your own chain client, seed your own liquidity, talk to the team in the dev discord. The nodes ultimately decide.”

That’s from Boone, the dev who built THORChain’s Monero integration. So it’s not a brush-off, it’s the same path XMR just walked, straight from the guy who paved it.

What THORChain is (if you don’t know)

A decentralised cross-chain liquidity protocol. Swap assets across chains natively, no wrapped tokens, no exchange, no one ever holding your funds. Want to go BTC to XMR? It does it directly, self-custodial the whole way. For privacy coins getting delisted everywhere, it’s becoming the on-ramp.

Why it’s big for $XTM

  • Deep, permissionless liquidity. Anyone can swap BTC, ETH or stables straight into $XTM and back, no CEX listing needed. Exactly what we’ve been asking for.
  • Right company. XMR and ZEC are already there. Same privacy vertical, same rails, reinforces the “next privacy play” narrative.
  • Censorship resistance. $XTM’s accessibility stops depending on any single exchange’s risk appetite. Big deal for a privacy asset.
  • Network effects. THORChain’s users are privacy-first, self-custody people, exactly who should know about Tari.

The costs

This isn’t a quick listing, integrations are earned:

  • A chain client needs building, the software that lets THORChain nodes read the Tari chain. Main technical lift.
  • Liquidity needs seeding so swaps actually work at size.
  • Someone needs to be in the dev Discord doing the work.
  • The nodes vote on what gets added. Our job is to make $XTM the obvious choice.

Not out of reach. We’ve got the blueprint, we just need to execute.

The proposal

Ootle comes first, full stop. This doesn’t compete with it. Once the launch is shipped and stable, we allocate dev time to the chain client. Done right the two compound, a live Ootle plus a THORChain integration is a serious one-two for Tari.

Funding: treat it as infrastructure from the community/Council allocation, a grant for the chain-client build, and an allocation to seed the initial pool. High-leverage, one-time build, permanent payoff. Exactly what the treasury exists for.

We’d also need a technical lead to own it. If that’s someone here, brilliant. If not, structure the grant to attract them.

Next steps

This is a proposal for discussion, not a done deal:

  1. Discuss it here. Poke holes in it.
  2. Council reviews feasibility, timing, funding.
  3. If they back it, we open a proper forum vote to ratify. Community decision, not mine.
  4. Then we engage THORChain properly and build.

The timing’s right. XMR and ZEC are live, the door’s open for the next one.

$XTM belongs on those rails. Because Tari will not be an island :turtle:

I strongly believe having Tari on Thorchain would be beneficial long term.

At the moment, Ootle is the priority.

One thing you forgot to mention.

Which is more technically feasible for integration with Thorchain, L1 XTM or L2 Tari?

For long term goals I would more be inclined to integrate L2 Tari into Thorchain, but it might be easier to integrate native L1, or maybe both?

Great question @AppleWithWorms! Addressing the L1 vs L2 integration trade-offs is crucial before drafting the technical proposal.

Here’s a breakdown of why starting with L1 XTM makes the most sense initially, while keeping L2 Tari as the ultimate long-term goal:

  1. Technical Feasibility (Phase 1: Native L1 XTM)

    • Proven Playbook: THORChain’s bifrost architecture is natively designed for L1 chains with UTXO or account-based models (like BTC, XMR, LTC). The integration path for XMR recently built by Boone provides a direct blueprint for Tari’s PoW L1 (Minotari).

    • Security & Stability: L1 integration requires creating a standard Chain-Client. It inherits the raw PoW security of the mainnet, making it easier for THORChain node operators to audit, run a daemon, and pass the Mimir vote without worrying about L2 state transitions or EVM/WASM execution complexity.

  2. Long-Term Ecosystem Depth (Phase 2: L2 Tari)

    • Integrating L2 into THORChain is strategically superior long-term because L2 carries the DeFi/Ootle execution layer, stablecoin liquidity, and faster finality (Cerberus BFT).

    • However, building a custom THORChain client for a sharded L2 state is technically far more complex and could delay integration significantly.

  3. The Recommended Roadmap: Start with L1, Bridge via 1:1 Burn

    • Step 1: Integrate L1 $XTM into THORChain first. This solves the immediate DEX liquidity problem and creates native cross-chain swaps (BTC/ETH/USDT $\leftrightarrow$ XTM).

    • Step 2: Users who want L2 functionality can utilize Tari’s native 1:1 XTM-to-XTR burn mechanism to migrate liquidity to Ootle (L2) seamlessly.

    • Step 3: Explore L2 integration once Ootle is fully matured and stabilized post-November 11 launch.

Bottom line: Integrating L1 XTM first is the lowest-hanging fruit with the highest immediate leverage for $XTM liquidity. L2 can follow as the ecosystem expands.

yes yes … all hands on deck for Ootle for time being … my intention is to have an understanding and roadmap going for the development effort post ootle

Thank you for translating my post into dev language :two_hearts:

I’m sure every piece will fall in it’s places, we have a really strong ground work done.

Glad it resonated! Focused execution on Ootle comes first. Once the engine is live, paving the THORChain rails post-launch will be the logical catalyst for true decentralized liquidity. Looking forward to the roadmap!

Aggregator is the way to go. Better than exchange.

an organised push for both is needed imo … retail is more suitable for exchange

The wrap version is already in some aggregator.

havent heard of this one … i use uniswap. i also think the broader takeaway form ThorChain is the comercial side … brings a lot of visibility and credibility

Most people don’t know about a crypto aggregator. The cool part is that you connect your wallet; your coins are never locked on an exchange where they could be seized.

1000+ partners trust LI.FI

Go to market faster. No integration and maintenance overhead. Benefit from risk mitigation, fail safety and neatless interoperability by a vast amount of underlying protocols (e.g. DEX aggregators & bridges), which LI.FI aggregates.

And most aggregator have their own widget to integrate with your website or wallet.

Blockchains like Cardano have their own widgets for their Tokens. Something to keep handy if we start to see tokens on Ootle.

I like the idea of getting integrated with THORChain and agree that this is something that would be beneficial for Tari to pursue.

From looking at their requirements, and prior experience, we do know that this will be quite some undertaking. As you mention, most of our resources are currently focused on supporting the Ootle launch. Maybe we could continue to build this relationship and then by the time Ootle has launched we might have a less non-committal answer on our chances at integration.

I also think the idea of more DEX support in general is important. What if we started to pursue integration with Komodo? It’s permissionless and utilizes atomic swaps/HTLCs to allow for trustless swaps between wallets. There are no liquidity pools, but it’s still a DEX and would be much cheaper/faster to integrate XTM.

If you want to go with Komodo, go with Komodo Classic. They have reinstated the 5% rewards: https://kmdclassic.com/

After Ootle, we can investigate how to get Tari L1 on ThorChain.

Yeah that’s fair and were aligned … getting an understanding now and positioning ourselves for a post Ootle roadmap is ideal … perhaps the council can discuss this proposal and get back to us.

I haven’t heard of Komodo but the more integrations the merrier of course

The case for THORChain was also the commercial visibility it will bring to Tari and the wider Ootle ecosystem

Yes, the more roads we open to Tari the better.

Baby steps, but steps forward :flexed_biceps:t6:
