CCS-style bounties

As Tari evolves into a community-driven project, it may be time to consider ccs-style proposals in addition to Tari Labs’ bounties. Funded requests would provide incentive for interested and capable parties to develop the L1 and L2 in a direction in line with popular sentiment, while generating a bevy of ideas for features or fixes.

Community members would have an opportunity to put their Tari where their mouths are and have a direct impact on setting course.

I asked a related question here – https://community.tari.com/t/about-the-bounties-category/18/2?u=0xskr33p, since depending on the desired functionality, approval from Core Contributors may currently be required.

True, and probably wanted/needed for at least the immediate future. Pure democracy is a road to ruin

@possum @Fox Could you please take a look at this question and respond in the thread?

Hi @PotR and @0xskr33p ! I replied to the thread here which might clarify a few things.

interesting discussion… I’ve got experience with community-run funding mechanisms in crypto and have some thoughts:

What worked:

  • Milestone-based releases instead of lump sums - kept projects accountable
  • Having a filtering layer before final decisions - the coming Council could serve this role for Tari
  • Clear success criteria defined upfront to avoid scope creep

What didn’t:

  • Pure community voting without technical oversight - led to populist proposals that weren’t technically feasible
  • Lack of collaboration between projects - everyone built in silos

@PotR completely agree on the “pure democracy = ruin” point. I’ve seen good intentions lead to bad funding decisions when technical feasibility isn’t vetted properly.

One thing I think could work well here: custom bounties. If I’m building a prediction market but lack wallet integration expertise, I should be able to post a bounty, escrow $XTM in a smart contract, and have it released once work is verified. This enables actual collaboration instead of just top-down funding.

thoughts???

Yes, I like this idea. In cases like these another trusted community member could act as the broker approving or refunding the escrowed amount. I’ve already got a smart contract in progress which could be used here. Hoping to finish it soon.

I also think your points on what works and doesn’t work is spot on. I’m looking forward to the council proposal so we can get more clarity on how it’s expected to be structured and determine if it’s suitable for this.

Appreciate the input @Fox! … great to see an escrow of sorts is already in the works.

Just a waiting game to see how the council will operate… hoping for a lightweight adaptation of governance so decisions can be made swiftly with minimal bureaucracy whilst governing the community’s interests
