Bluesky Guide: Getting Started

Bluesky is going to become an increasingly large part of our engagement efforts going forward.

It’s a decentralized social media platform built on an open source protocol – so people that value open source, decentralization, and data sovereignty are highly concentrated on Bluesky. These are obviously values we share, and those are people that are more likely to be receptive to Tari’s messaging.
On top of that, engagement just seems to be better despite a vastly smaller userbase. Zcash has been leveraging this to great effect, and seem to be the only active cryptocurrency community using that platform in any organized fashion.

I really need the community’s help bootstrapping our presence on Bluesky. Signing up, setting a profile pic, following some accounts, and cross-posting the stuff you’re already posting to Twitter or elsewhere on Bluesky as well.

I’ve made a couple starter packs (follow lists) to help get people started:

One is for Tari Community members, and another is just people that I’ve seen posting about crypto (usually positively).

Here’s a popular AI starterpack:

I’ve heard from people on both X and Bluesky that the quality of AI conversation is actually better on Bluesky – maybe this appeals to some of you.

Curating your feed:

Go ahead and join the “For You” feed by spacecowboy17 as well. Bluesky allows users to create their own algorithmic feeds and let other users follow them. This feed is one such example, and is responsible for ~5% of all engagement on the entire platform.

You can curate this feed by liking posts. The feed will find people who “like” the same posts as you and show you what else they’ve “liked”. I’d suggest taking some time to curate this feed by being very selective with your initial 25-40 likes or so, and even beyond that.
Remember likes are public, so if you see an account you like you can view their likes to find posts to help curate your feed. It will greatly improve your experience if you only use the like button for posts you actually like. Using reposts to boost other’s posts is more effective than likes anyway.

Suggestions:

There are a couple “rules” (suggestions) I’d suggest following in order to be successful on Bluesky:

1. No arguments / “coin wars” – Bluesky has what they call the “nuclear block”. When people block you, you can no longer see or interact with their posts, you can no longer search or see their profile, and all of your comments/replies/quotes to their posts are removed. Most users on the site use this very liberally. It’s very “shoot first ask questions never”. Don’t get blocked, that hurts engagement.

2. No obvious shilling. The same strategy one might use on Twitter could actually negatively impact engagement on Bluesky. They absolutely detest “cryptobros”. Think of it more as a long form web1 forum, like old school bitcointalk or early reddit. Quality, more targeted posts/responses without the well known “Twitter Shill” tone will work much, much better here.
The common strategy that seems to work well for others is to get your initial post visibility/trending first and then do your “engagement” in the replies on the thread.
